Jwc008

“It seems to be a recording that could only be made for tape - not constrained by styles of any particular time, but fully exploiting the sonic idiosyncrasies of a homemade mixtape.”

Roy Mohan Shearer, Berlin, 2012

/ info

Red Deer Club present their first album on vinyl, from no other than Jonnie Common. A summerous collection of wondrous pop oddities, coming in at just over thirty minutes, this is the debut album from one of Scotland’s finest exports. The label has been a fan of Jonnnie’s work since his ‘Down The Tiny Steps’ output. We are so proud of this limited release.

ANY CHARACTER HERE

/ bio

Earlier this year, Jonnie released a compilation (‘DESKJOB’) featuring his extensive productions of no less than 10 much lauded emerging Scottish acts (including: Meursault, Panda Su, Conquering Animal Sound & eagleowl), the respect and trust of whom he’s managed to earn over the past couple of years since dissolving his former identity as Down the Tiny Steps.

Pre-2009, Down the Tiny Steps were a staple on the Glasgow live scene and, having released with Fence Records, had a reputation for vibrant accessible eccentricity. In 2009, after yet another difficult line-up change, Jonnie decided the purest course would be to strip his output of any illusions and house his creative pursuits under the honest label of his own name.
Yes, it is his real name.

With an illustrious musical past, Jonnie Common is ready to release his debut album into the world. A homespun affair that
encapsulates the artist’s finest pop moments. A record that has been made for summer. Warm yourself.

Deskjob

27/9/11 - ANNOUNCEMENT:

Due to some very generous but slightly inaccurately timed promotion courtesy of the lovely Song, By Toad records, people are under the impression that Oct 3rd is a day for the diaries so, rather than just letting that slip silently into the ‘what happened there?’ drawer, the extremely limited remaining physical copies of Deskjob will be available from the Toad shop as of monday.

When they’re gone, they’re gone.

Long live Toad. “Semper Bufo!”

ps. Though it features two of the bands on their roster, Deskjob isn’t actually a Song, By Toad release but Matthew is incredibly supportive of the project and we thought this would be a good way to confuse the issue even more :)

DESKJOB is an album of performances by…

Meursault, Panda Su, Conquering Animal Sound, eagleowl, Adam Beattie, Iona Marshall, Autistic Angus, The Oates Field, Adam P Gorman, and Inspector Tapehead.

…with all tracks being produced by Jonnie Common;

a Glasgow-based artist recently signed to Manchester label Red Deer Club, formerly known as Down the Tiny Steps (Fence Records) and currently part of Inspector Tapehead (Song, By Toad).

Jonnie invited this rich cast of talent to record one of their songs in a minimal format and persuaded them to grant him cart blanche in adding instrumentation as he saw fit. The result is a strong and eclectic full length album of unique arrangements which will be launched with a one-off performance at The Captain’s Rest on Wednesday the 6th of April.

The launch will feature 9 of the 10 acts, with each act playing 2 songs in intimate fashion.

“This project was about getting lots of people who I think are immensely talented onto a release together. I’m very proud of the album and if it turns any fans of one act onto any of the 9 others, then I’ll have done what I set out to.” Jonnie

DESKJOB is released on April 6th 2011 and limited to 500 copies.

Please note: after the first 100 copies have sold, DESKJOB will only be available directly from the featured acts at their live shows.

For more info, tickets to the launch and album pre-orders, visit www.jonniecommon.com/deskjob

RDC015 - DTTS - live at Red Deer Club 2008 (CD-R)

From RED DEER CLUB RECORDS:

To celebrate our fifteenth release, there doesn’t seem to be such a perfect time as this one. A document of what both label and band have achieved over the past three years, Red Deer Club proudly present ‘Down The Tiny Steps – Live….

Recorded live at Sounds From The Other City festival (May 2008), the ‘last’ live outing for the Red Deer Club, the three piece rocked the rafters of Sacred Trinity church with their synth pop sounds

Documented on this stunning limited edition album, both artist and label are very proud of the outcome. Have a listen. You might just want to go back to church.

In May 2008, Dunc Le Chunk hosted a venue at the ‘Sounds From The Other City’ festival in Manchester under the Red Deer Club flag. As it was to be the last Red Deer Club for the time being while Dunc puts his efforts into the RDC label, we wanted to do something to mark the occassion. And we kindof did. By way of tribute we started to record a song using samples of a telephone conversation with Dunc (that had been recorded without his knowledge) and although we didn’t have enough time to develop it into a full song, the resulting track was performed at the event and made available for free download during June 2008.

Private: Reviews

DTTS live @ Is This Music? c/o The 13th Note, 21/3/2008

So, Down The Tiny Steps have a big act to follow, but the beauty of this line-up is in the contrast. Thus, the headlining Fence artists bring in repetitive beats and an array of flashing lights and meters to propel their tunes; think Beck or The Beta Band with a decided Fife accent. With the packed crowd just about able to tap a collective foot, a diversion into dance territory is the perfect way to end an eclectic evening.

DTTS live @ Fence Records, Homegame 5 festival, 28/3/2008

Down The Tiny Steps can be proud of the fact that they are the only band this reviewer has yet known to reference the board game Monopoly in a song, something that surely ought to happen much more often. The Glasgow trio – a kind of glitchy electro/folk/hip-hop cross between Hot Chip and the Beta Band – look like decent prospects too, and their closer, Handstand, was an immensely pretty little thing.

By MALCOLM JACK Published Date: 31 March 2008 Source: The Scotsman Location: Scotland

DTTS live @ Sideways Saloon c/o The Bay Horse, Manchester, 09/9/2007

Glasgow’s Down The Tiny Steps completed the line-up by filling a Beta Band-shaped hole in all our lives. Their opener, ‘Infinitea’, began with a summery, chiming xylophone, and frontman Jonnie drawled “Is this the end of the world or is he fooling around?” in his cosy Scottish burr before everything kicked off into a glorious declaration of lo-fi electro intent. DtTS manage to be acoustic blues, funk and nu-rave (*shudder*) all at once, while still maintaining a lovably daft demeanour. One particularly heartfelt moment was played in a pair of laboratory goggles which had been modified with feathers (”I want to detract from the emotional content of this song with my goggles”, explained Jonnie) to resemble Altern8 at a burlesque night. Not only were they a forcible talent, this band of Celtic jokers were a refreshingly lively spectacle. More synthesized bluesy madness please.

By Megan Vaughan (Manchester music scene)

These guys have a fairly eclectic sound and drift between Badly Drawn Boy esq folk rock to electronic, sampled, quirky songs. Single ‘Aye Spy’ starts off with acoustic guitar and intimate vocals before the skipping drum beat and country tinged / dreamy guitars come in. It’s a wonderful slice of carefree indie folk with some lovely harmonies and it’s only 1.45 secs, I like the little laugh at the end of the track, very sweet.

‘Catapult’ is also a very good track, the vocal melody and the programmed beats remind me of the Beta Band or even King Creosote. It sounds like they have a sense of humour to; I love some of the lyrics and samples they use like ‘Ancient symbol for madness’…you really have to listen to it to understand why this is good, it makes me chuckle.

DTTS @ T in the Park, 07/7/2007

“As the florally-decorated synthesisers belonging to Down the Tiny Steps were being heaved on to the stage, Johnnie Common was already in a frenzy behind his turn tables. His huge talent as a DJ is what most impressed during their tight show, which came on like Hot Chip collaborating with The Avalanches. And what the band lacked in focus they made up for in sheer energy; Ben Robb’s wild tribal drumming on bongos was fascinating when fused with quirky samples and heavy guitar during the wonderfully bizarre ‘Hankys’. In contrast, ‘Summer Is For Going Places, Winter Is For Watching Films’ was simplistic, but didn’t fail to produce a smile thanks to a collage of samples.”
By STEVE McCAUL Published Date: 15th July 2007 Source: Seven Days supplement of The Sunday Herald Location: Scotland

Aye Spy [single reviewed in The Skinny

Two members of Down the Tiny Steps hail from Birnam on the edge of the Highlands, and the band have the enviable backing of the Fence collective. It’s not hard to see why on the evidence this cracking three track single, which has shades of folk but with a rough-edged blues backbone. Although I hate to employ an often over-used association at the moment, comparisons with the Beta Band are unavoidable, particularly vocally. The third track ends in a Stone Roses style instrumental wig-out which sits astride the borderline between enjoyable and self indulgent. Overall though, a very promising first single. 4/5

DTTS on Fence Records’ 2004 release ‘Fence Reunited’

If lo-fi folk is a not-quite-inversion of rock glamour then this could seem like a flip of those pictures of Reed, Pop and Bowie looking debauched. Are we meant to marvel at how otherworldly they are, and see how mundane we are in comparison? Luckily, this is more ‘community’ than ‘scene’. Down The Tiny Steps covering Pip Dylan’s ‘Lemonbelly’ stands out. Like Jim O’Rourke with Beta Band vocals, it’s enchanting. Like a lot of this album, it sounds like a warm fire and a good conversation, with shared references and shared memories more important than that glass of scotch you’re cradling.

By Jim Cassius : Gigwise.com : Feb 2004

The Fence Collective – ‘Fence Reunited’ (Fence Records)

This is a strange one, a real curate’s egg, good in parts and not so good in others. The Fence Collective are some of Scotland’s foremost alternative folk artists and include in their ranks HMS Ginafore, James Yorkston, Down The Tiny Steps, King Creosote, UNPOC, Gummi Bako, The Pictish Trail, Lone Pigeon, On The Fly, Beth, Pip Dylan and John Bews. Following the sombre opener, Comfort In Rum by HMS Ginafore and James Yorkston, the album produces two songs of quality in Lemonbelly (Down The Tiny Steps) and the languid Easily Led (James Yorkston, King Creosote, Down The Tiny Steps & HMS Ginafore). It is no coincidence that Down The Tiny Steps has a part in both songs as they are one of the plus’s that are to be gained from the collection.
I said that the album is a strange one but I have gone on to point out eight very good tracks. The others are not poor quality by any manner of means but it is a shame that not all of the artists reach the heights of Down The Tiny Steps, HMS Ginafore, Lone Pigeon, King Creosote, The Pictish Trail, James Yorkston and Pip Dylan. I believe however that the good overcomes the not so good and the album deserves to be in your collection as an example of contemporary folk.
